Leon Pantenburg, of Survival Common Sense, who lives in Bend, Oregon, also recommended that I check out Silver Falls State Park, which he wrote about here. It's not far south of Portland and certainly looks worth the trip:

But any short hike I can do near the coast or in the old-growth forests will be a welcome break from working behind a keyboard; and from the heat and humidity that has already arrived to mark the beginning of another sweltering Mississippi summer.

Wow, lookit all that green, down here in south Texas its all gray and khaki yellow - major drought.
ReplyDeleteA couple of days ago, was warned by one of our clients that the airport security lines are taking far longer than even before due to the OBL death, so I'd get there at least an extra hour early than before for your flight - better safe than sorry.

ReplyDeleteI am currently 50 miles up the mcKenzie river east of Eugene and it is spectacularly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe McKenzie originates from under ground and is pure melt water and is a gorgeous chrystal blue color.
It is also a very famous trout and salmon river.
If you ever get a chance, come here.It is beautiful and is about 65 miles from Bend.
I have lived in the Pacific Northwest my entire life and it is hard to beat for being green and pretty.
I will only be here another week and I hope the clouds burn off.
Bustednuckles, I wish I would've had time to check out the whole state. I did manage to drive some 600 miles around the northwestern part of Oregon and got in some good hiking as well in the short 2 days I had available. I hope to get back there again sometime. I love the Pacific Northwest region.
